So I recently got a comment from an article by a man named Charles that merited a reply from me, but I think it deserves an article of its own. I’ll paraphrase here:
What do you do when what’s said and what’s written on the same language subs are different?
Excellent question. Particularly excellent because for most of us, it is impossible to know beforehand whether or not the subs will match up. But I don’t think that this kind of learning material is necessarily worthless to the student. Let’s take a look at particular benefits that this could bring:
- You get to see/hear similar expressions with the same meaning at the same time.
- Since these often have similar words or words with shared roots, you get some additional vocabulary practice that you might not have already had.
So it’s not all lost. Of course, the work around can be kind of tricky. If you have native speaker friends (a topic that will come up soon enough here), then it can help to have confirmation from a native speaker of what exactly was said when you get to a point that you don’t necessarily understand. However, if this can not be done, I often then just go for the subtitles at that point. Save the listening for a later time after you’ve put in hours and hours of time.

I am a strong advocate for learning languages by watching videos in that language. With DVDs containing multiple tracks, especially english learners benefit most (as US produces ALOT). Best of course is always when you want to learn the language from that the video originally is made in.
I am not a big fan of subs there and encourage friends and my parents to watch without, cause with subs, your focus immediately moves away from ears to eyes.
But then again, learning other languages myself, i know that their is a level, where you will have no benefit, if you do not get support by subs.
You may even benefit alot, if you do, as a learner, notice the difference between what you understood as spoken word and what you read
I remember reading somewhere that it’s more beneficial to watch shows with exact subs/dubs because we actually get a pronunciation boost by watching the speaker’s lips as they speak, I guess for form or something. Subs that don’t match dubs can actually damage pronunciation (not to mention understanding) because you could be matching sounds with the wrong mouth shapes.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
